NISHIKI TAYUI, Artist and Assistant Professor of Art, University of North Dakota

Artist and art professor Nishiki Tayui started at PCC after moving to the United States from Japan. She had to navigate her way through the U.S. educational system while taking classes and working as she struggled financially. She completed her studies at PCC and transferred to Portland State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree. Her master’s degree in fine art came from Indiana University. Tayui now teaches at University of North Dakota and she exhibits her artwork on an international level. She also organizes student art projects in local businesses and galleries in Grand Forks, North Dakota. “She is an inspiring teacher and has infectious energy,” said Mark Smith, her former art instructor. “She’s truly having an impact on the University of North Dakota community. Her artwork is beginning to gain recognition as well. Now as always, it is tremendously difficult to pursue a career in the arts and use one’s training to impact the community. Nishiki is a shining example of someone who has persisted.”
